About the Alberta Scottish Athletic Association

The Alberta Scottish Athletic Association was formed in 1998 as a way to organize athletes for training and competition.

Since that time we have been involved in several ongoing Scottish Highland Gathering events throughout Alberta. In addition to the Highland Gatherings we hold competition and fun events.

What?

The Alberta Scottish Athletic Association is a non-profit society for those athletes in and around Alberta who have shown a more dedicated interest in Scottish Heavy Athletics and the promotion of the Games.

When?

The Alberta Scottish Athletic Association was officially formed in 1998 when we noticed that we were getting a good core of athletes travelling to the relatively few Highland Games that take place around Alberta.

Why?

As the level of the athletes around Alberta increased, the possibility of records being set and broken increased. To facilitate this, official weights and implements needed to be used and maintained. This also helped protect the athletes from using sub-standard equipment at some of the games, by having official (and hence safer) equipment to use.
As well, by having the individual highland gatherings pay a nominal fee to assist in transport of equipment, as well as subsidizing some of the athletes who had to travel for hours to get to a games, the gathering was freed of the responsibility of running the Heavy Events, as we would judge, announce and cleanup the events area.
